DESPITE the steamy weather, hail stones the size of marbles have fallen in the Top End. Gavin Lowry, of Humpty Doo, said he felt the hail hit his car when he was driving along the Arnhem Highway on Thursday.”It was wild,” he said.”I was driving home and there was a storm starting and I noticed something hitting the window and I said to my friend: ‘what was that?’”I looked in the mirror and there was hail bouncing on the road.”

How I made a tank of petrol go 25% further…

Inside of the car

I used to have to fill up my car every 10 days or so. Every Pay Day and then a quick topup just before the next Pay Day and I still only got 400 km for my 54l tank. Now I make it through the entire fortnight and even longer. And I make 500 km every time.

How?

  • I don’t let my revs go above 3000 rpm. This is the single biggest intervention I have done.
  • The aircon doesn’t go on until I am driving 80 km/h. Under that, I open the windows.
  • I make sure the tyres are pumped up.
  • The car gets serviced.
  • I drive at the speed limit.
  • I try to remember to put the car in neutral when waiting at traffic lights. Still working on this one.

Now I like to drive and in the past I have been known to drive rather quickly. Yes, I have definitely taken advantage of the NT’s open speed limit at times. But these days with the price of fuel and the cost to the environment, it’s just not worth it.
